From the camping site we can easily access to the lake and the lake also is near to the Fork Glacier which of the famous place. The lake has been formed around 14,000 years ago by glaciation.

Lake Matheson

The water of the Lake Matheson is dark brown, so on calm day they create the idea reflective surface. The color is caused by natural leaching of organic matters from the surrounding native forest floor. An easy walk passes over the Clearwater River suspension bridge.

The Clearwater River drains off the lake and is brownish under the bridge, however it quickly becomes clear and true to its name. The track continues through ancient native forest, including tall rimu and kahikatea trees, to a pontoon that extends out onto the lake.
